Trump Lawyers Ask to Meet Attorney General Garland
(Reuters) – Lawyers for Donald Trump on Tuesday requested to satisfy U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland over the work of a particular counsel who’s dealing with two investigations into the previous president.
“No President of the United States has ever, within the historical past of our nation, been baselessly investigated in such an outrageous and illegal trend,” attorneys John Rowley and James Trusty wrote in a letter that Trump posted on social media.
They requested a gathering with Garland “at your earliest comfort to debate the continuing injustice that’s being perpetrated by your Special Counsel and his prosecutors.”
Garland appointed Special Counsel Jack Smith in November to deal with the 2 Trump investigations.
The first investigation is trying into makes an attempt to intrude with the peaceable switch of energy following Trump’s November 2020 election loss to President Joe Biden.
The second is Trump’s retention of labeled paperwork at his Mar-a-Lago property in Florida after leaving workplace in January 2021, and whether or not he tried to hinder the Justice Department’s investigation.
Trump’s attorneys didn’t specify within the letter which investigation they needed to debate.
The letter was not signed by Evan Corcoran, who’s recused from the labeled doc investigation after a choose compelled him to testify earlier than a grand jury about his discussions with Trump in regards to the materials. Corcoran remains to be working with Trump’s authorized workforce on the second investigation.
A spokesperson for the Department of Justice and a spokesperson for Smith declined to touch upon the request by Trump’s attorneys for a gathering with Garland.
